Abstract

The specific intent was to establish the effect that determines strategic direction. The study was anchored on transformational leadership theory. A descriptive research design was used. The study targeted 149 county staff at the senior leadership level consisting of the county public service board, executive committee members, chief officers, and departmental/unit heads stationed at the county headquarters. A census of these staff was undertaken. The study used primary data gathered using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data obtained was analysed by carrying out descriptive and inferential analysis. A multiple linear regression model was fitted to show the relationship that exists between the study variables. The results showed that strategic direction positively influence performance of Garissa County Government. This study therefore concludes that strategic direction positively but insignificantly affects performance of Garissa County Government. This study recommends the county government of Garissa to focus on ethical practices as they positively and significantly influence performance. This can be accomplished by the county leadership consistently to routinely convene to examine the status of strategic milestones, all of the county's strategic activities, and its investments in order to verify that the strategy and actions are on track.
