ADVANCEMENTS AND OBSTACLES IN ACHIEVING GENDER EQUALITY AND LEADERSHIP IN THE KENYAN POLITICAL SPHERE
GENDER EQUALITY AND LEADERSHIP IN THE KENYAN POLITICAL SPHERE
Abstract
Gender equality in leadership positions is a global concern, and Kenya is no exception. This study examines the state of gender equality in Kenyan county governments, focusing on the representation of women in leadership roles, the challenges they face, and recommendations for promoting more inclusive governance. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combined quantitative data from surveys with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions. The study also included document analysis of relevant policy documents and reports to provide context. The findings revealed persistent under representation of women in county government leadership positions. Discriminatory cultural norms, limited access to resources, and gender-based violence are significant barriers that hinder women's active participation and advancement. Despite constitutional and legal reforms aimed at promoting gender equity, these challenges persist. The study underscores the importance of tailored strategies that address the specific challenges and opportunities unique to each county while promoting gender equity in all aspects of county governance. Based on the research findings, this study offers recommendations to address the under representation of women in leadership roles within Kenyan county governments. These recommendations include promoting gender-sensitive policies, conducting awareness and education campaigns to challenge discriminatory norms, ensuring equal access to resources, eliminating gender-based violence, implementing mentorship and capacity-building programs, strengthening data collection and monitoring systems, engaging civil society, fostering political will, supporting research and evaluation efforts, and seeking international collaboration. Implementing these recommendations can pave the way for more inclusive and equitable governance in Kenyan county governments, aligning with the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution.
